This documentary pays tribute to one of America’s favorite writers. For over seventy years, Earl Hamner, Jr.’s writing has entertained and inspired people all over the world. As the creator of the television classis The Waltons and Falcon Crest, and as writer of such films as Spencer’s Mountain and Palm Springs Weekend, Earl’s versatility is evident. He also wrote several great episodes of The Twilight Zone, which have become fan favorites. Other television credits include Wagon Train, The Invaders, Gentle Ben, Apple’s Way, and many more. Television movies and teleplays to his credit include Heidi, Aesop’s Fables, The Homecoming; A Christmas Story, Charlotte’s Web, and Lassie: A New Beginning. Earl also wrote the screen adaptation of Where the Lilies Bloom.

 

In the film, many of the actors who worked with Earl share stories and comments about him. There are also stories from family members and friends who know him best. The documentary follows Earl on a visit to his hometown of Schuyler, Virginia, where we get to see several locations that are very special to Earl. Fans around the world who recognize Earl’s voice as the narrator at the beginning and ending of each episode of The Waltons, will enjoy hearing Earl’s story in his own words – the story of one writer’s journey from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to the hills of Hollywood.
